Dear friends,

On 16 October 1998, Augusto Pinochet, the former president of Chile, was arrested in London for serious crimes he had committed in his country, under the principle of universal jurisdiction. Young lawyers, human rights activists and victims soon came up with the idea to create an association to fight against impunity for international This is how TRIAL, initially also known as Track Impunity Always, was born in Geneva on 6 June 2002. The small organization created 20 years ago has grown and developed in the years since. Today, TRIAL International has almost 40 staff in Geneva, Sarajevo, Bukavu, Kananga and Kathmandu. For 20 years, TRIAL International has been fighting to ensure that those responsible for international crimes are punished, and that the victims' quest for justice is supported.

To mark this anniversary, TRIAL International has had the unique opportunity to collaborate with a contemporary artist from Geneva, Jérôme Hentsch. Touched by and passionate about the work of the organization, he decided to create paintings inspired by TRIAL’s logo. His works will be exhibited at the Flux Laboratory art gallery, 5 rue de la Muse, Geneva, from 12 to 16 October.

As 16 October is a symbolic date for TRIAL International, we have chosen to dedicate the entire week to celebrate our 20th anniversary and to organize events for staff, experts in the fight against impunity and the general public on the premises of the art gallery. In addition to the opening of the exhibition "Là-bas comme ici" by Jérôme Hentsch, which will take place on 12 October, from 6 p.m. onwards, you are warmly invited to three additional and hugely interesting events.

First, we will have the chance to hear Éric Emeraux, former Head of the Central Office for the Fight against Crimes Against Humanity, talk about his work and the book he wrote about his experience, "La traque est mon métier", during an event entitled "Éric Emeraux et la traque des criminels de guerre." Hosted by Giulia Soldan, Head of our International Investigations and Litigation Programme, the event will take place on Thursday 13 October from 12.30 to 13.30. Sign up here.

Then, Chiara Gabriele and Adrijana Hanusic Becirovic, legal advisors at TRIAL International, will speak of wartime sexual violence and the lessons learned from our programmes in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Bosnia and Herzegovina, at an event entitled "NGO's Fighting against Wartime Sexual Violence: Concrete Lessons from Bosnia and DRC", on Friday 14 October at 6.30 pm.
